The Public Relations Student Society of America proposed a question about social media classes and if we think they should be a requirement today. With the amount of work that I have done in social media while under the umbrella of public relations, I strongly believe students should be required to take a social media and online media class before graduation. The content that public relations professionals are required to create and share today is dispersed on every social media outlet available.
I have not taken any social media classes throughout my program here at CWU, but I have taken a class called Publication Design. Publication Design focuses on learning and using Adobe InDesign to create a number of different pieces of online media. Aspects of Photoshop were used in InDesign as well, but the class’s sole focus was InDesign. I found this class to be very useful for creating promotional material, flyers and informational pieces.
Social media, on all platforms is important in keeping businesses and brands in their target audience’s eye. If a public relations professional or student is not familiar with all social media platforms, they are not reaching everyone in their audience. Also, if professionals today are not able to clearly explain why social media is needed today, they are not working in their client’s best interest. I think every public relations program should have more technical media production classes. Practice in Adobe Creative Suit and video, print and digital content creation will only benefit public relations professionals today, so students should be practicing at their university.
