One of the biggest topics in business/ tech this week is the rumored purchase of Beats Music by Apple. If this is confirmed in the near future, I’m curious to see what rebranding or branding will take place. Will Apple upgrade the Beats headphones at all? Or will they focus mainly on the music streaming service in hopes of keeping up with the likes of Spotify and Pandora?
A recent Forbes.com article titled, Why The Apple-Beats Deal Makes Sense, And Why It Doesn’t, explains the possible reasoning behind the acquisition. The article explains the lackluster debut of iTunes Radio and the less-than stellar sound quality of Beats headphones. Apple could be looking to try a different hand in music streaming by way of a program that has gathered a rumored 10,000-20,000 subscriptions since its launch in January of 2014. Then Apple could take their tech knowledge and evolve the Beats headphones from more of a fashion piece to a headphone that sounds as good as it looks.
I don’t think Apple will have much trouble branding their new streaming service or headphones, if they do in fact go that route. The prestige of the Apple brand should be enough to get consumers interested. I’m curious as to how they are going to launch the products. Will they reveal details at the annual late summer iPhone/ iPad launches? Will they work with Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine for a collaborative event launch? Will they share information or will they surprise consumers with an unexpected launch? This is a topic that I’ll be keeping an eye on as it develops.
