I am a big fan of music. I love going to shows and discovering new bands. I never listen to the radio, but I have gigabytes of metal, EDM, hip-hop, country and indie artists in my library. I played in a band for a few years after high school, and during that time I learned the best way to follow my favorite local or underground bands.
Social media now allows bands to share pictures and videos, promote concert and tour dates, and communicate directly with fans more than ever. Just like businesses are now utilizing social media, bands of all sizes can now build lasting relationships with their fans and followers via Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. I think it’s cool because smaller bands that can’t afford mainstream promotions can still put in the work and reach new fans and followers all over the world. From a fan’s side of it I think it’s great. I don’t have to search for band websites or published updates regarding tours or album releases. Instead, I get updates from my favorite bands in the newsfeed that I monitor all day. I feel a little more “in the know” when it comes to my favorite artists, and it makes me happy to continue supporting them.
